Programme Outline

Providing palliative care to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can present unique challenges, particularly when a person is non-verbal and approaching the end of life. How do we recognise and respond to symptoms when communication is limited? How do we understand distress when conventional approaches to assessment may not apply? And how can different care teams work together to provide care that is both clinically appropriate and genuinely person-centred?

In this 90-minute online sharing session, we reflect on the care journey of an adult with non-verbal autism and terminal cancer, drawing on the experiences of the teams who cared for the patient across different settings. Through the perspectives of the various teams that took on this task, the session will explore the challenges, creative adaptations and small moments of insight that enabled us to provide care that respected the person's individuality and dignity.
