Programme Outline
Individuals living with severe and chronic mental illnesses (SCMI) often experience enduring psychological, social, and existential suffering that may persist despite ongoing treatment. With a focus on people with life-limiting physical illnesses, its commitment to relieving suffering, preserving dignity, and enhancing quality of life, palliative care offers valuable perspectives for supporting individuals living with severe and chronic mental illness.
This panel brings together music therapists working across palliative care, end of-life care, and mental health settings to explore the intersection between palliative care and severe mental illness. Through clinical reflections and case examples, panelists will examine how music therapy supports emotional expression, personhood, agency, meaning making, and quality of life, while addressing dimensions of total pain.
This session invites participants to consider how palliative and mental health approaches can complement one another in fostering dignity, connection, and hope even when cure or recovery remains uncertain.
