Programme Outline
Researchers and public institutions often collect rich data on people in our society, including children, the elderly, employees and so on. However, many statistical methods focus on associations between variables, neglecting the great diversity among people.
Latent Class Analysis (LCA) is a “person-centric” statistical method that sorts people into groups based on multiple characteristics. This draws attention to the “heterogeneity” or important contrasts between people and allows us to describe “typologies” that tell people’s stories in greater depth. LCA is also flexible in its application to different types of data, including longitudinal data, and can be used to predict distal outcomes such as physical or mental health.
For these reasons, LCA is a popular method across gerontology, psychology, public health, sociology, economics, and many other fields. This in-person workshop aims to deliver a beginner-friendly introduction to LCA, how it works, when it can be used, and its strengths and weaknesses. Participants can expect a combination of theoretical content and hands-on exercises using the Stata software (free training licenses will be provided). No prior experience is necessary.
