Programme Outline
In an era of increasing healthcare complexity and technological advancement, the human element of care remains paramount. While empathy is widely recognised as crucial for quality healthcare, its development and maintenance within clinical settings remains challenging. This presentation draws from our qualitative research exploring how clinicians and students in Singapore understand and experience empathy in healthcare settings. We begin by examining current evidence on empathy's impact on healthcare outcomes, highlighting critical gaps in understanding empathy within Singapore's unique multicultural healthcare context. We introduce EMPATHISE, a framework synthesised from our research findings, offering key elements for developing and sustaining empathy in healthcare settings. Drawing from our key findings, we also offer critical reflection points for stakeholders at all levels-from students to seasoned professionals and supervisors. These insights prompt us to reconsider how we understand, value, and nurture empathy within Singapore's healthcare communities.
